Our school district is seeking a reliable and motivated Grounds Maintenance Technician to help maintain safe, attractive, and functional outdoor environments for students, staff, and the community. This position plays an important role in caring for district campuses, athletic facilities, and outdoor learning spaces.
The successful candidate will take pride in maintaining school grounds through mowing, landscaping, athletic field preparation, and seasonal maintenance. This role works closely with the district’s maintenance and operations team to ensure that our facilities reflect the high standards we hold for our schools.

Job Title: Grounds Maintenance Technician Classification: Classified Staff (Exempt) Reports To: Director of Facilities Work Calendar: 12-month position (or as determined by district needs)
Position Summary
The Grounds Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of all district outdoor spaces. This includes mowing, landscaping, athletic field preparation, snow removal, and general exterior maintenance to ensure school grounds are safe, attractive, and supportive of student activities and community use.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Grounds and Landscape Maintenance
- Mow, trim, and edge lawns across all district campuses and properties.
- Maintain landscaped areas including planting, pruning, watering, mulching, and weed control.
- Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides according to district policy and safety guidelines.
- Remove trash and debris from outdoor areas including parking lots, playgrounds, sidewalks, and athletic facilities.
- Maintain trees, shrubs, and plant beds.
Athletic Field Maintenance
- Prepare and maintain athletic fields for school activities and events.
- Drag, line, and maintain baseball/softball fields and other athletic surfaces.
- Monitor field conditions and assist with repairs to ensure safe playing surfaces.
- Assist with event setup such as goal placement, field striping, and equipment.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operate grounds maintenance equipment such as:
- Mowers (riding and push)
- Tractors
- String trimmers
- Leaf blowers
- Aerators
- Snow removal equipment
- Perform basic preventative maintenance and report equipment repair needs.
Seasonal Responsibilities
- Perform snow and ice removal from sidewalks, parking lots, and entrances.
- Assist with seasonal cleanup including leaf removal and storm debris.
- Support irrigation system maintenance and repairs.
- Assist with exterior building maintenance such as pressure washing, fence repair, and signage.
Facility Support
- Assist the maintenance department with minor repairs or facility needs when requested.
- Support setup and teardown for district events, activities, or community use of facilities.
- Monitor grounds for safety hazards and report concerns promptly.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of landscaping and grounds care practices.
- Ability to operate and maintain grounds equipment safely.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong attention to safety and detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to interact professionally with staff, students, and community members.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work outdoors for extended periods.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, agriculture, or related field preferred.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily outdoors.
- Exposure to weather, dust, noise, and mechanical equipment.
- Occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekend work may be required for events or weather-related duties.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with district policy by the Director of Maintenance or assigned supervisor. |
