TITLE: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION
JOB GOAL:Responsibilities include providing, implementing, and maintaining an effective bus transportation
service in accordance with established guidelines and standards of the Board of Education,
Kansas State Department of Education, and Federal Guidelines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Act on transportation safety concerns and deliver customer service issues from a variety
- of sources to administrators, parents, teachers, students, bus drivers, and bus aide
- monitors, for the purpose of correcting immediate safety concerns and/or making
- recommendations for resolution and or improvement.
- Respond to calls from parents, school secretaries, principals, bus drivers, bus monitors,
- and district office personnel for the purpose of providing the necessary information
- regarding transportation questions and student discipline matters.
- Supervise designated staff to monitor I.E.P. records, transportation needs, and be fluent
- in legal requirements.
- Administer the development and maintenance of daily and special bus routes for the sole
- purpose of ensuring a safe, timely and efficient delivery of students to designated
- locations within all relevance to safety and transportation regulations.
- Assist with assigning drivers to bus routes for the purpose of ensuring effective, safe,
- timely and efficient delivery of students to the appropriate locations.
- Assist in developing long and short range plans, programs and budgets for the purpose
- of ensuring that resources are effectively utilized, expenditures are within budget, and
- district educational objectives are achieved.
- Communicate with a variety of outside agencies including law enforcement, community
- members, and the media for the purpose of ensuring safe bus operation and compliance
- with state safety inspection and schedules.
- Coordinate a variety of assigned department activities and programs (e.g. training,
- assignments, etc.) to employees for the purpose of delivering services on compliance
- with established guidelines.
- Investigate conflicts and accidents, involving school buses and or department personnel
- for the purpose of making recommendations according to district procedures.
- Maintain a variety of manual and electronic files and records (e.g. employee records,
- safety reports, training materials, route information, incidents, conflicts, etc.) for the
- purpose of providing up-to-date reference and complying with regulatory requirements
- and established guidelines.
- Prepare a variety of standard and special reports and documents (e.g. route safety,
- accident and or incidents, video tape observations, etc.) for the purpose of documenting
- activities, providing written support and/or conveying information.
- Preserve and maintain the transportation billing processes, formulas and contacts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION:
- Maintain effective working relationships with students, district staff, parents and community.
- Possess the ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication, to enhance a cooperative action to meet educational needs of students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Related Field or equivalent work experience
- Minimum 5 years in a school and/or transportation related leadership role
- Understand systems required to run an effective transportation operation (mechanical, software, training) and utilize existing technology efficiently
- Be an effective problem solver and decision maker
- Must have or be able to obtain a CDL License for the transportation of students and the ability to maintain a commendable driving record

Must have the ability to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in
order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to
satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating
standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; planning and
managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios;
understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze
situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific Knowledge based competencies
required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent codes, policies,
regulations and/or laws; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures;
computer operations and management information systems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: occasional lifting,

sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature
variations and in a generally hazard free environment. Specific vision abilities required by this
job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
