Primary Purpose 

The Stand-by Transportation Substitute Driver serves as a daily on-call support position for the Transportation Department. This employee may function as either a Substitute Bus Driver or Substitute Bus Aide, depending on departmental needs. When no routes require coverage, the individual performs light custodial tasks, fuels district vehicles, and assists with vehicle cleaning and upkeep during typical route hours, both morning and afternoon. This role is also the primary contact for weekend and after-hours activity routes.  

 

This position is scheduled for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon in a standby transportation substitute capacity. Compensation is $28.00 per hour when serving as a Substitute Driver and $22.00 per hour when serving as a Substitute Aid. When route assignments are unavailable, the base compensation rate is $15.50 per hour, with an increase based on education and experience. Activity route assignments are compensated at $18.00 per hour. 

 

Qualifications 

Education/Certification(s)/License(s): 

Clear and valid Kansas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or willingness to obtain one. 

Special Knowledge/Skills: 

Must be 21 years of age 

Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam 

Ability to complete required bus driver safety training 

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions 

Ability to use maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to follow routes and locate addresses  

Ability to manage student behavior 

Ability to communicate effectively with others 

Ability to operate bus 

Basic knowledge of cleaning practices and vehicle fueling procedures

Essential Job Functions 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  1. Serve as the daily substitute for the bus or school vehicle following the assigned route and adhering to established schedules. 
  2. Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities. 
  3. Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays. 
  4. Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notify supervisor of needed repairs.  
  5. Keep assigned bus clean and maintain appropriate level of fuel. 
  6. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete required corresponding reports. 
  7. Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations.  
  8. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street. 
  9. Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situations warrants. 
  10. Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students.  
  11. Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student’s behavior when warranted. 
  12. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses. 
  13. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector. 
  14. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.  
  15. Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled route. 
  16. Install snow chains during inclement weather. 
  17. Maintain safety certification. 
  18. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. 
  19. Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and other drivers. 
  20. Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported. 
  21. Comply with all district policies, rules, and regulations. 
  22. Perform light custodial work within the Transportation Department facility. 
  23. Fuel district vehicles and ensure fuel logs are kept up to date. 
  24. Assist with interior and exterior cleaning of buses and transportation vehicles. 
  25. Serve as the first available driver for approved weekend and extracurricular activity trips. 
  26. Assist students on and off the bus according to their individual needs including lifting and carrying students with disabilities. 
  27. Supervise students as they board and exit the bus and cross the street following established safety procedures. 
  28. Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and riding rules and regulations. 
  29. Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs. 
  30. Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems in a timely manner to the appropriate administrator. 
  31. Other duties as assigned. 

 

Mental Demands/Physical Requirement/Environmental Conditions: 

  1. Requires the ability to operate school bus; two-way radio; global positioning system (GPS); safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher. 
  2. Requires the ability to frequently sit for prolonged periods of time. 
  3. Requires the ability to drive for prolonged periods; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist, and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching. 
  4. Requires the ability to frequently stand, twist, or reach, and occasionally kneel/squat, bend/stoop, or push/pull. 
  5. Requires limited light lifting and carrying of items 25 lbs. or less daily. 
  6. Requires the ability to maintain emotional control while under stress and in stressful situations. 
  7. Requires the ability to handle frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles.  
  8. Requires the ability to frequently work irregular hours and occasional prolonged hours. 
  9. Requires timeliness and regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
